FrostBoss - An Emissions Compliance Leader

09 September 2009

It’s amazing what is happening in the sheds and backblocks of orchards and vineyards around New Zealand. Nestled among the vines and fruit trees is a company using the latest Caterpillar technology to improve the performance of frost-fighting wind machines.

Hastings-based FrostBoss Wind Machines can be seen in frost prone areas in New Zealand, Australia, Italy, Iran, Canada and Turkey, protecting crops such as grapes, stone fruit, pipfruit, kiwifruit, Nuts, citrus and even ground crops like lettuces
During spring a frost is a viticulturists and orchardists worst nightmare. It can destroy burgeoning crops and slash potential profit. To counter a frost, wind machines are used to draw down the warmer inversion layer air above the orchard or vineyard and blow it to mix with the colder layer of air around the trees and vines. Start up and shut-down devices are automatically controlled by a temperature and wind sensor in the coldest part of the block. This system ensures a secure and long-term form of frost protection.

FrostBoss has recently developed a new C49 fan blade that features a new three-dimensional blade shape built using advanced composite technology, as part of a four-blade frost protection arsenal this winter. The new blade blows more air, use less energy and creates less noise.

As well as new blade technology, FrostBoss has selected Caterpillar C6.6 engines from Goughs Power Systems to ensure their wind turbines are powered by the latest engine technology in the market.

Goughs’ Kerry Johnson says a key feature with the C6.6 model is the Tier 3 emission compliance technology that ensures the engines powering FrostBoss wind machines comply with emission standards here and around the world. “Fuel efficient and emission-compliant engines are now mandatory in Europe, and as the market for wind-fan technology increases overseas, its important for FrostBoss to minimise their carbon footprint.”

“The Cat C6.6 utilises proven Caterpillar ACERT technology, and features an advanced common rail fuel system controlled by an Electronic Control Module to mange injection timing, rpm, turbo wastage, and other functions including engine protection.”

Goughs Power Systems has supplied FrostBoss with more than 100 Cat C6.6 engines for their wind machines.

Hamilton City Council recently takes delivery of three CAT gensets

01 January 2009
Hamilton City Council recently took delivery of three CAT gensets complete with acoustic canopies. The gensets were sized to best match the electric load without expensive overestimating. By accurately matching each load scenario to the specific genset, the council saved over 20% by selecting the optimum unit using the CAT Spec Sizer program. Spec Sizer enabled Goughs to confirm product selection to the Electrical Engineers in terms that were accurate and precise. CAT power is the product of choice for the Hamilton Water Treatment Station.

Transmission innovation impresses

26 September 2008

The first Caterpillar On-Highway transmission in New Zealand is up and running and performing as promised.

The CX31 six speed transmission, which is married to a C15 ACERT at 500hp 1850 lb-ft, is fitted in a Kenworth T908 rated at 97 ton. The installation was carried out by Southpac Trucks Ltd in Auckland for owner Campbell Knox of Pepco Enterprises, who is based in Mt Maunganui.

The truck spends most of its time doing short trips within the port carting coal on an overweight permit or a 2km round trip to the fertiliser works. It also carts logs from stockpile to port for export. According to Campbell, "This application is very hard on clutches and you are forever adjusting them."

The deal was put together by Scotty Haberfield (Southpac Trucks) and Murray Kernohan (Goughs On-Highway Business Manager) and had the full backing of Caterpillar, who said that the wharf work was the perfect application for an automatic transmission.

The project received special sign-off as the same application in off-highway would have required the CX31's bigger brother, the CX35, which is capable of handling 625hp at 2050 lb-ft.
